I remembered Heaven 17 from back in the day with their big UK hit ‘Temptation’. Coming from Sheffield UK and with two founding members who were originally in Human League, they definitely own a spot in the 80s synth pop pantheon. As expected, a dedicated and older crowd who knew all the words. It was nice to be at a gig and not feel like the oldest geezer in the room. I enjoyed lead singer Glenn Gregory’s between song Yorkshire banter and tales of being in a club in Sheffield in the 80s alongside members of Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, Thompson Twins and ABC – a synth pop who’s who. A steel town with a rich musical history, I see Sheffield as the UK’s Detroit, particularly in terms of electronic music. Gregory and Martin Ware even did a Human League version of Unchained Melody. Synth Britannia Rules OK.
